RILEY - MOTORSPORT RACE CARS

as Old as the Industry, as modern as the Hour

The cars used by the works team in the various race, rally and other sporting competitions they entered were often based on standard cars from the range. Below are links to a few of the standard models, and some info on a few specials.

The history of the six-cylinder racing cars is particularly complicated, and not fully understood. For more information see the Racing Sixes page.

Riley Brooklands

1928

The Riley Nine Brooklands, whilst not intially developed by Riley, proved to be one of their better racing cars.

Riley 12/6 TT

1933-4

The TT Racing Car was the forerunner of the MPH, and was a very successful competition car, initially built for the Tourist Trophy event in 1934

1932

The Riley 12/6 Brooklands was shown at the 1932 Motor show, and then quietly dropped and forgotten before more than the prototype was built. It was, however, the direct precursor to the 12/6 TT cars, and therefore all other 6-cylinder Riley racing cars.

Riley MPH

1934

The MPH model was available to the works team with a variety of 6 cylinder engines - more than just the three fitted to road cars - and may also have raced with the 12/4 engine.

Riley 12/6 Grebe

Riley TT Sprite

1934-7

A low slung racing car, along the lines of the Brooklands, but scaled up around the 12/4 running gear. The production Sprite Sports car was developed from this model.

Riley MPH

Riley 12/6 Grebe

1933-4

The Grebe was developed as a roadgoing version of the 12/6 TT Racing Cars, but like the Brooklands 6 before it, it never entered production.

Riley TT Sprite

Riley IFS Racing Car

1936

The TT Sprite model was further developed to employ Independent Front Suspension (IFS) for the 1936 season. The car was designed to take either the 1½ Litre 12/4 engine, or a bored out 2 Litre 6 cylinder engine. It is not clear how many of these cars were built.

Riley Alpine Gamecock

Riley 9 Ulster Imp

1933-4

The Ulster Imp was developed specifically for racing in the sub 1100cc classes, as a more modern replacement for the Brooklands.

Riley IFS Racing Car

Riley Alpine Gamecock

1934

The Alpine Gamecock was a specially developed version of the 14/6 Gamecock, designed to compete in the Alpine Trials.
